Jake Laznovsky, 32, of Mastic, and his father, Jim Laznovsky, 62, of Lindenhurst, were operating a 25-foot 1993 Cougar Cat in Bellport Bay the night of Thursday, May 16. Around 6 p.m., they say the craft ran aground inside of the New Inlet.

Police say the men contacted a commercial salvage operator who tried and failed to reach the stranded vessel due to shallow waters.

The commercial salvage operator then contacted the Marine Bureau around 11 p.m., prompting a response from Marine Kilo, according to police.

Marine Kilo subsequently deployed a small and shallow draft boat, which was again unable to reach the men due to the shallow water, police say.

Police ultimately contacted Hampton Bays Fire Department for assistance. The department launched its hovercraft from the Smith Point Marina with two firefighters aboard. The hovercraft shuttled the stranded men to Marine Kilo, which transported them to Forge River Marina in Mastic.

Jake and Jim Laznovsky were uninjured.
